Do You Own a Dog?

If you have one, for sure you love it dearly right? As much as I love my friends, I love my dog too, maybe even more since my dog is my constant companion. That is why I cringe when I see that my dog is in pain.

For a long time, I found it hard to determine when my dog is in pain

But now, since we have been together for long, just a bit of change on its action will immediately tell me if there is something wrong with him.

My Dog is in Pain

For example, there was this time that I took my dog at the park for his afternoon walk, I immediately noticed that he does not want to play, does not even react when other dogs play or call him. Then, while we were walking home, he stopped and seemed like he wanted to be carried. So I carried him because it’s getting cold outside and I knew we needed to get back to the house. That’s when I noticed a wound on his right hip. I felt so incompetent and unloving because of that, because I kind of forced a playful afternoon, not knowing that my dog is in pain.

With that in mind, I always look at him every time he seems sad or extra tired. When I see a change in reactions especially at feeding time, then I immediately look for reasons why my dog is in pain. It’s nice that when this habit of mine was forming, I took note that dogs get illnesses just as humans do. They can also get a stomach flu, headache, ulcers and even arthritis!

This is what I do when my dog is in pain?

First, I let him know that I am there for him. Dogs can feel concern just as we do. So every time I see that my dog is in pain, I immediately scratch his head or tap him. I talk to my dog during this time because I know that he understands me and can feel the concern in my voice. Then, I would check his body to see if there’s any wound, abrasions, burns or other external painful causes. If I can’t not find anything, I bring him to the vet since I know that my dog is in pain on the inside.

One mistake, that I did in the past after realizing that my dog is in pain is giving him ibuprofen. This is after I checked his body for external causes of pain, I thought that he might be feeling the same thing as we humans feel so I just popped the medicine in his mouth. He didn’t get healed and I think he even became un-happy. So I took him to the vet, who checked him out. The vet told me that I should not give human medicine to a dog unless prescribed by a vet.

These are the things I’ve learned to take care of my companion. I am especially aware when my dog is in pain, and always try and help him recover.
